2012 was a very busy year for the Advocacy Center. We provided 333 forensic interviews, up from 282 in 2011. Our two full time counselors provided 1290 sessions to children who had been abused. All of these services were provided at no cost to child’s family. Our facilitators trained over 100 adults in how to prevent and respond to child sexual abuse through the Darkness 2 Light program. Our annual fundraisers: the Chance to Dance, Golf Tournament, and the Christmas Concert were all successful in raising much needed funds for these services. Unfortunately the Children in Crisis tax credit expired in August 2012, making it more difficult to solicit individual and corporation donations. Our dedicated supporters came through anyway with an increase in donations. This community cannot be thanked enough for all the support we receive. Two legislators have introduced bills to reinstate the tax credits this session. I will keep you posted on the status.
We are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year of serving child abuse victims in 9 counties in Northwest Missouri. We have many activities in the planning stages with a banquet and awards in April. Also in April is our 7th annual Chance to Dance. Please make plans to attend. We will be having an exciting new event this year in May! I will update the site when we get closer to the date.
Unfortunately we expect to be just as busy with interviews and counseling as in 2012. The fortunate thing is though, that we are here to provide the help and support our children need. I would like to do several Darkness2Light trainings again this year in the hope of preventing more abuse. If you are interested in training for your group or organization, please call 816-232-1744 for information.
