On October 26 & 27, 2015, 34 representatives from 20 different agencies in Buchanan County met for two days of discussion and planning on how we can prevent child abuse in our community. We had two wonderful facilitators from Minnesota that led us through this endeavor.
Child abuse in Buchanan County is above the state and national average. Last year 2,700 children reported abuse in Buchanan County and the Advocacy Center interviewed 385 children. Because of the statistics, the Advocacy Center applied for and received a grant from Fox Valley Technical College to provide this community planning training. One agency can’t fix the problem, it “takes a village.” The large group broke up into smaller teams to work on four goals of child abuse prevention. These goals are 1) Enlighten and eliminate denial of child sexual abuse, 2)Building protective factors around our children, 3)Informing providers who will then inform the unconnected, 4) Educating all children on sexual abuse. Each team will begin working soon on their goal. If you are interested in helping with this project, please call Joyce Estes at 816-232-1744.
