“Giving Tuesday” occurs on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It is a movement to create a day of giving at the beginning of the holiday season. It started in 2012 as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season (i.e. Black Friday and Cyber Monday). The idea is for you to consider donating to a cause or charity instead of spending money on ‘things’.
Why give to the CAC? There are lots of options out there for you to consider when you give to charity, so why us? First, and most obviously, you give because you want to help children who have been abused. Second, you want to know where your money is going. Giving to a local charity, like the CAC, helps you know that your dollars are going to help children in your own area who are in need of our assistance.
Third, you know that children who have been abused are in need of help in order to deal with what they have been through and to try and get their childhoods back. That’s our job—it’s what we have been doing for the past 23 years. Finally, counseling and other costs are on the rise and it gets harder all the time to cover those costs.
The average cost of one hour of counseling is $80. The Center is on pace to provide over 1,000 hours of counseling in 2016. That’s about $80,000_ annually. Counseling is only one aspect of what we do at the CAC. We are going to go over 600 forensic interviews this year (a forensic interview is a videotaped conversation between a child and a trained interviewer about an event that the child has experienced or witnessed. At the CAC, that event is abuse of some kind). At an average cost of $300 per interview – that’s an annual cost is $180,000.
Wow. As you can see, we are not being frivolous when we ask for your donation. The children of Northwest Missouri are in great need and this is your chance to help. If you give between the hours of 9AM and 10AM on 11.29.16, your gift is worth twice the amount! We have had an anonymous pledge to match any donations made during that time frame!
We encourage everyone to donate today. Or join us on 11.29.16 for #GivingTuesday. You can make a difference in an abused child’s life.
